A press conference of the Association "Russian Automobile Dealers" (ROAD) was held in Moscow, where ROAD President Alexey Podshchekoldin summarized car sales results in Russia for 2025. Thus, 8,476,500 cars were purchased in our country, of which 7,065,221 were used (83%) and 1,411,279 were new (17%).
He highlighted an alarming trend: the share of passenger cars over 10 years old in the Russian vehicle fleet has grown from 48.9% in 2015 to 72.2% in 2025, amounting to approximately 33 million units. The average age of a car in Russia is about 17 years. In his opinion, to prevent further aging of the vehicle fleet, it is necessary to sell over 3 million cars per year.
*"Do you want to drive a 17-year-old car? Probably not very much. Therefore, it is critically important for us to produce and sell more than 3 million cars per year. Obviously, this goal cannot be achieved overnight. But more cars need to be sold in Russia,"* stated Alexey Podshchekoldin.
He noted the success of two brands in 2025 — Haval and Chery, each selling over 100,000 cars. In his opinion, the company Belgee also showed good results by offering cars comparable to AvtoVAZ products but in more attractive configurations. Regarding Changan, the head of the association noted that its prospects raise questions due to changes in the recycling fee, and the company may need to reconsider its strategy, possibly exploring options for joint assembly.
The average price of a new car in Russia in 2025 was 3,540,000 rubles, 6% higher than the previous year. According to ROAD's forecast, new car sales in 2026 will remain at the 2025 level (1.4 million units), while sales of used cars will decrease by 5% to 6.5 million units. The average price of a new car is also expected to rise to 3,850,000 rubles (+10%). In addition, large-scale discounts like those seen last year are not expected due to shrinking dealer stocks, changes in the economic situation, increased production costs, logistics, and recycling fees, which limit opportunities for significant discounts.
