The Russian Ministry of Transport has proposed introducing an automatic photo and video recording system for traffic violations at railway crossings. The corresponding draft resolution has been posted for public discussion, the ministry reported.
The document was prepared as part of a state program aimed at reducing accidents at railway crossings. The essence of the new measure is to equip crossings with special technical devices that will automatically record violations. This will allow for timely suppression of offenses and bring violators to administrative liability based on the recorded data.
The main goal is to reduce the number of collisions between cars and trains — among the most severe accidents, which often claim the lives of not only drivers but also train passengers and locomotive crews. Priority will be given to installing cameras at crossings where such accidents have already occurred in the past.
The Ministry of Transport emphasized that modern technical solutions will improve traffic safety for all parties involved: train passengers, locomotive crews, and drivers. The introduction of the new system will also help achieve target indicators for reducing accident rates, the ministry added.
